Why our daycare is just for small dogs (35 lb and under)

Short answer: Wag 'n' Woof only takes small dogs, 35 lb and under, because small dogs play best with dogs their own size. Matching size keeps play fair and safe, helps shy dogs gain confidence, and lets us design the whole space around little dogs instead of making them fit into a big-dog room.

Size matters more than you'd think

Dogs of every size can be friends, but in a busy daycare playroom, size changes the game. A happy 70 lb dog who wants to play can knock over a 10 lb dog without meaning any harm. Small dogs learn that the room isn't safe, and they either hide or get defensive.

When every dog in the group is roughly the same size, the rules of play are fairer. Chasing, wrestling and taking turns all work the way they're supposed to, and small dogs get to be confident instead of cautious.

What it means for your dog

More real play. Little dogs who might stand at the edge of a mixed group often join in when the other dogs are their size.

Calmer days. Fewer collisions and less overwhelming energy means a more relaxed group, which suits seniors and quieter dogs too.

Confidence that lasts. Plenty of our regulars arrived shy or anxious. With the right group and a patient team, they learned to enjoy other dogs. One client told us her puppy started with a lot of anxiety and "now absolutely LOVES daycare."

A space that fits. Our large common area, quiet rest space and enrichment games are all set up with small dogs in mind.

Which dogs are a good fit?

If your dog is 35 lb or under and enjoys, or could learn to enjoy, the company of other dogs, they're likely a great fit. That covers a wide range of breeds and mixes, from Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus and Pomeranians to French bulldogs, Boston terriers, Cavaliers and small doodles and poodle crosses.

Weight is a guide, not the only factor. Every new dog starts with a free assessment, where a trained member of our team gets to know your dog and makes sure daycare is a good match.

What if my dog is shy?

Shy dogs are often the ones who benefit most from a small-dog group. Start with a few half days, let us know what your dog finds hard, and we'll work with you on ways to help them settle in. Tell us anything that helps: a favourite toy, a sensitive spot, a habit to watch for.
